Life After The War of Rebirth: Building a Post-Apocalyptic World

The Post-Apocalyptic genre is incredibly varied. Zombie take-overs (and a plethora of different takes on those undead villains), nuclear war, and world-wide plagues are just a few aspects of a very colorful range of stories to choose from. They all fit within this genre, but they are all unique in their own way. And The Wanderer Trilogy is certainly no exception.

The War of Rebirth, as it is named in the story, is only superficially covered within Eva’s story. It acts as a simple glimpse into the past and how the present came to be. Although I don’t spend too much time describing the events of this war, I do place hints as to them. At some point in the future, I do intend to expand on this story… so be sure to stay tuned for that!

In just a few words, this war wiped out most of humanity when opposing political powers attacked one another with their arsenal of bombs. A few are noted to be nuclear in nature, others simply destroyed humanity without poisoning the earth beneath them. That was intentional to preserve and depict a world overgrown by nature.

Why? It’s an obvious representation of how nature endures whether humans exist or not. Not only was that idea the catalyst of the Nomad’s spirituality with their Great Mother, but it also represents a reflectively enduring nature of many of the characters, and survival as a whole. In order to live in this world, torn by continued conflict between the Gangs and Freepeoples, you cannot stop growing. Not to mention, it adds a sort of ‘beauty in the evil’ aura to the story.

Let’s dive into the War itself for a moment. The quote: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” by George Santayana really stuck with me throughout the years. History is written by the winners. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The list goes on. But there is so much truth to those notions. We clearly haven’t evolved in today’s society, given the current state of everything, so why would my story be any different? A war that wiped out much of humanity is a possibility right now. But what would happen if someone pulled the trigger? How would that manifest and play out? Would the survivors try to make the world better?

An answer to that last question, in a sense, is yes. Well, at least at first. There would be that initial attempt to right the wrongs of former leaders and redefine what a new society should look like. However, humans are wired to see the differences in the world around them, and the numerous environments they grew up in shapes their perception. It shapes their ideals, too. Without that awareness and the willingness to be open-minded, those people are doomed to repeat the past. What would begin as minor disagreements would transform into the creation of different settlements, then different ideas of ruling, then the ego takes full control for some of those places, swallowing up those who oppose them.

But that’s for another story…

I did like the idea of Vaults that the Fallout game series depicts, so I did take some aspects of that idea to integrate into The Wanderer Trilogy and beyond. But it isn’t the focus (nor should it be). It acts as the foundation of Tommy and Jake’s change throughout the novels, but their origin matters less and less as the story goes on. What begins to matter is how the survivors of the war outside have transformed the region.

Clearly the Gangs in The Wanderer Trilogy have not learned from the conflict of the past. Their power-hungry nature ravishes the land. Some people never learn. Some people never change.

But this environment won’t be the same throughout the rest of my world. The coming spin-offs will explore new settings, introducing unique powers and how their influence shapes even the smallest communities. My ultimate goal with these new creations is to immerse the reader in different ways, making it feel genuine and real.

The other goal is to see how far I can push the envelope, just as I do with my characters.

Purpose RELEASE DATE IS JANUARY 15, 2026. ARE YOU READY?
